Stress Skincare Tips During the 2020 Election

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, so stress can manifest on your skin easily. 2020 has been quite a stressful year for most people around the world and we haven’t even made it to the Presidential election yet. We at the Orlando Dermatology Center are taking the effort to give you some simple skincare tips for stressful times so you, Democrat, Republican or undecided, can look great this November.

Stress Skincare

Stress can increase cortisol levels which in turn increases inflammation. When you react to a perceived threat—which can be mental, physical, or emotional—your body produces cortisol, the major stress hormone, alongside adrenaline to pump up your body’s nervous system and provide an energy burst to combat the threat. This reaction occurs regardless of whether the stress comes from a physical or mental place, and while the burst is only to combat stress for a short period of time, life accrues many stressors that may put you into a chronic state of stress that will harm your skin. So how can we solve stressed skin?

#1 Clean Diet

Have you ever heard the phrase, “you are what you eat?”. Well in the case of your skincare, thats true. Ingesting junk food and having a bad diet can cause you to break out and produce more cortisol. Make sure your diet includes protein, carbohydrates, good fats and natural sugars, as well as masses of antioxidant-rich leafy greens. It is recommended that you consume two liters of water a day to reduce the effects of dehydration on the skin and body. Staying hydrated is a major factor in keeping your skin looking great.

#2 Exercise

Do anything that raises your heart rate, whether its going to the gym, swimming, or participating in a sport. Exercise, by getting the heart rate up and improving blood circulation, can help to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin which keeps the skin healthy, promotes collagen production, and promotes new skin cells which keeps the skin looking glowing and is also helpful for anti-aging. Making sure you have a balanced exercise routine is great for any stress skincare solution.

# 3 Sleep & Meditation

This may seem basic, but in these uncertain times you should be certain to get a good night’s rest. Your body boosts blood flow to the skin while you snooze, which means you wake to a healthy glow. Skimp on sleep and your complexion can look drab, ashen, or lifeless. Stress skincare routines should be surrounded around living a life that reduces the amount of stress your body and brain takes and sleep is an essential part of having a properly functioning body.
